Dear Supporters,
We at Hero’s Bridge are closely monitoring the outbreak of Coronavirus (Covid 19) and following all CDC guidance while continuing to provide vital assistance to our elderly veterans. The elderly are the most vulnerable to severe disease and death and I want to share what we are doing this week to protect our heroes.
- Our Battle Buddies and Resource Scouts have stopped in-person visits to prevent the chance of inadvertently exposing our veterans to the virus.
- We implemented proactive telephone calls to all of our veterans to address social isolation and assess their supplies of food, medicines and other necessities.
- Our team is solidifying an emergency process to provide porch drops of supplies to our most at-risk veterans so they do not have to visit high traffic grocery stores and pharmacies.
- On Friday, staff are being trained in the equipment and technology to provide video visits and direct messaging with our veterans. This support is being provided through our relationship with Capital Caring Health and we thank them for their unwavering support during this crisis.
The three most common issues with our veterans are social isolation, food insecurity and substandard housing conditions, all issues that will be exacerbated by this global pandemic. We know we will face many challenges over the next few months caring for the hundreds of veterans already under our care and we expect an escalation in calls for assistance from communities as the crisis evolves.
Many have asked how they can help us in our mission. Unfortunately, we cannot accept donations of food or other tangible items due to a lack of storage and the risk of placing contaminated items in the hands of veterans. Our greatest need right now is monetary donations which allow our Battle Buddies to be the most nimble in meeting veteran needs.
We have created a special Battling Coronavirus Fund for those that wish to help us in this fight. We will use this fund to purchase porch drop supplies, provide video visits and other emergent needs as they occur. We are always grateful for our supporters but it is in these most difficult times that we truly realize how blessed we are.
