This year marks the 15th anniversary of my father’s passing. He was a career Marine who served two tours in Vietnam.
As we finalize the details for our 7th annual Vietnam Veterans 5K—now just a few days away on March 29—I find myself reflecting on what he would think of all our efforts to take better care of our older veterans. I take comfort in knowing that through this event, we are helping other Vietnam veterans navigate the same challenges he might have faced.
Spending my formative years on Marine bases, we were surrounded by service members and their families. Watching Marines come and go from Vietnam was part of everyday life. Soon, at the Village, a new community will emerge —one where veterans will once again find camaraderie, support, and a place to belong as they did in base housing and barracks.
Perhaps, in the faces of those who call it home, I will catch a glimpse of my father.
I invite you to join me on March 29 for our 5K, as we honor every Vietnam veteran and give them the hero’s welcome they so greatly deserve.
