Every month I try to step back and reflect on what part of Hero’s Bridge is moving me most, and lately, it’s our Battle Buddy Program.
This work is simple on the surface: a veteran visiting another veteran. But what happens in those visits is extraordinary. It’s in the shared laughter over old service stories, the quiet drive to a medical appointment, or the phone call that turns a lonely afternoon into one of connection.
A few weeks ago, one of our Battle Buddies told me about visiting a Korean War veteran who hadn’t had company in days. When he left that afternoon, the veteran said, “You gave me something to look forward to again.” That’s what this program does, it restores hope, one conversation at a time.
Recently, WUSA9 came out to see this work firsthand. Their team spent the day with our veterans and captured something special: the way compassion can bridge decades, ranks, and miles. I hope you’ll take a few minutes to watch their story and see what I see every day, the quiet heroism of those who continue to serve long after the uniform comes off.
Thank you for standing with us, for believing in this mission, and for helping ensure no veteran walks alone.
